Walt Disney‘s Aladdin was an animated fairytale about a poor street urchin who used wishes from a magical genie to win over a princess’s heart, and defeat the evil spread throughout the land by the Royal Vizier, Jafar. Adam Green’s Aladdin is almost exactly the same, except it’s live action and probably popped into this universe through the psychedelic end of a wonktastic K-hole.
If this description sounds like hyperbole—or like the words that would gurgle out of somebody’s mouth as they watched Yellow Submarine and simultaneously had their head pounded in by pan slicked with THC oil—keep in mind that this take on Aladdin is a magical carpet ride through Adam Green’s brain; and the musician, artist and filmmaker, who reportedly made his first film, The Wrong Ferrari (full movie here), after being inspired by a Ketamine trip, most definitely knows how to get wEirD.
Adam Green’s Aladdin, which is supposedly “set in the modern day world” (“modern day” must mean “LSD-fueled” in this context), is a “hyper-sensory, poetic and humorously subversive take on the classic Arabian Nights tale [and] stars Adam as Aladdin living with his dysfunctional family in a ‘regular’ American town ruled by a corrupt Sultan with a decadent socialite daughter.”
This “regular American town,” according to the above trailer, features a genie that can 3D print anything (including ecstasy), “space bucks” that look and sound like Mario coins, a protagonist who is “deaf to his own soul,” cartoonish orgies, a not-so-metaphorical shit sandwich, and a grown-up Kevin McCallister as the leader of a rebel army known as the “Magical Americans.”
Although the film was funded through a $50,000 campaign on Kickstarter, it’s managed to attract many recognizable talents, including Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road), Natasha Lyonne (American Pie, Orange Is the New Black), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), and put-your-hands-on-your-cheeks-’cause-he’s-just-so-fleek, Macaulay Culkin. Other artists and musicians will also appear in the film, like Francesco Clemente, Jack Dishel, Har Mar Superstar, Devendra Banhart, and Bip Ling.
The feature film, as well as Green’s accompanying soundtrack, will drop (acid) on April 15th in the US and Canada, and May 12th worldwide via iTunes, Amazon Video-on-Demand, and the back of an after-hours Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine parked in the far corners of wizard’s hippocampus.
