Netflix has made leaps and bounds ever since they started developing their own original programming. It probably only surprised a few people when it was suggested, earlier this week, that Netflix was in striking distance of actual networks in terms of viewership. Netflix might make an even better case in this regard with the possibility of developing a Wet Hot American Summer series to its subscribers.

David Wain, the director of Wet Hot American Summer, and Michael Showalter, one of the members of the legendary ensemble cast, are set to executive produce what would be a prequel series. They’re aiming to get many of the original cast members, which include, in addition to Showalter, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Joe Lo Truglio, Janeane Garofalo, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, David Hyde Pierce, Elizabeth Banks, and Christopher Meloni. The idea that all of these folks would play the slightly younger versions of these characters nearly 15 years after the original movie should be tantalizing enough for Netflix to fast track this series immediately.

The fate of a full-length feature sequel to Wet Hot American Summer is still up in the air, as it has been for several years now. Wain, reportedly, has been writing a script, but he’s not making any promises for making a sequel a reality. Even if the Netflix series is the only thing to come from all of this, we should all be happy to possibly see so many members of The State back together again.
