A Very Late Fallout: New Vegas Review. Sorry.

What? This is the appropriate attire for a Wasteland Courier. Shut up.

Fallout: New Vegas came out this week and – what? What do you mean it came out last week? You guys must be fucking with me because I clearly remember going to Gamestop, buying the game and then I…um…okay I know this one. Huh. Oh! I was wearing pajamas and I went to the fridge for a diet coke and then I was letting a frontier doctor tend to my head wound and after that I was killing some chem fiends on my way to the McCarran NCR base in order to TAKE A DIRTY MONORAIL TO NEW VEGAS AND OMG WHAT DAY IS IT?

Now that we’ve established I am a week late and a few caps short of a stimpak let’s move on to the reviewing!

By now, you’ve probably read the many posts about bugs and thrown your PS3 across the room in a glitch induced rage but I am here to say that despite getting stuck in countless doors/rocks/deathclaws and having my Pip Boy totally crap out on me during a goddamn shoot out, I still love this game.

The New Vegas storyline hearkens back to Fallout 1 and 2 which isn’t surprising given that Oblivion is holding the reins again and here is where I fess up to having never played the first two. I had to do a bit of Wiki-ing (which always leads to me reading waaaay too much about Eleanor of Aquitaine – call it Wikigressing) to understand what was going on and I still don’t really get the part about Hoover Dam. Anyway. I’ll have to leave the majority of comparisons between the first two Fallouts and this one to those who’ve played all the games but I will say I was impressed with how seamlessly Oblivion’s New Vegas integrated the Fallout 3 experience – especially The V.A.T.S. system, morally polarizing quests, and somewhat unreliable yet still tantalizing map markers.

I know the graphics are very 2001 and the endless running though the wasteland should bore the shit out of me but it doesn’t and here’s why: The base level of difficulty in New Vegas is hard. Like dying every five minutes hard. This is a twenty hour campaign which could easily turn into a nine hundred hour campaign based on the hordes of irradiated critters ALONE. I wish I could explain why this is good rather than annoying and maybe it’s a mixture of nostalgia, the Mister Vegas radio program, and Snuffy the Mole Rat but instead of falling asleep in my sarsparilla I find it soothing.

I also find shooting a chem fiend in the face with a sawed off shotgun soothing so take that with a grain of salt. Tell me your New Vegas thoughts in the comments!

I honestly have no idea what people mean when they say F3 or New Vegas is ‘hard’. You just run up to within a couple dozen feet of enemies and shoot them repeatedly in the head. Collect every piece of junk worth more than 10 caps/pound and you’ll soon have enough money to get combat armor and either an anti-material rifle or just lockpick and get the Gobi Campaign rifle. Aside from the Big MT quest (Old World Blues) there are no areas in the game I’d consider especially difficult at all. I’ve massacred entire Casinos, death claw caves, etc. And I’m not even very good at FPS games. This game is just super easy to exploit and break.

  2. Twombs says:

I HATE THIS GAME!!!! LISTEN TO MY ADVICE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO RAGE QUIT AT THE END!!!!

save before you fight the hoover damn battle!!! because if you have no prior save points YOU ARE FUCKED! because there is no post hoover damn play! YEA! that game just fucking ends!!!

I HAVE 17 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY FOR MY CHARACTER AND NO FUCKING SAVE POINT BEFORE THE END!!!! 17 HOURS OF MY LIFE WAISTED ON THIS FUCKING GAME!!! AT LEAST LET ME GO BACK AND PLAY BEFORE THE END BATTLE!!!! FUCK YOU OBLIVION!!!!

  3. GGGGGGGGG says:

AHHHHHHH THIS GAME IS SO IMPOSABLE & WHERE THE FUCK IS LAS OR I MEAN NE VEGAS THIS GAME SUCK SO HARD

  4. Kayko says:

All bugs aside I rather enjoyed it. I spent 5 days straight playing. Beat the game, beat the side quests, and have to play it over again to get the remaining side quests… But that being said I am now bored with it because I have beaten it. It was not as long as Fallout 3 I have found and I can’t wait for the upcoming DLC… And for Christ sake I wish Bethesda would put out more GODDAMN PATCHES!!!!!

I have experienced a major glitch in the Train tunnel near the boomers, you go into the the tunnel and you’ll see a glowing ghould come out of room. As you make your way towards the room, you’ll fall through the floor (glitch not a trap door) and stutter and spurt and eventually the games spits you back at the other end of the tunnel. This is after the update for 360

    Oh and the game rocks

  6. I love it, I haven’t had any major crashes(PC). Played through as merc now to play as evil and good and see what I missed the first time. Cass is awesome by the way, if you can pick her up, do so.

I love fallout new vegas, even though it glitches so hard, I’m pretty much nowhere cause the game is so dang hard. Plus getting ambushed by 10 giant rad skorpions several different times doesnt help. Its one really long and difficult game, ill never get board but on the other hand ill probably take a super sledge to my xbox outta frustration.

  8. Duder says:

I’ll start off by saying that I’ve played all of the Fallouts and New Vegas is my new favorite with Fallout 1 being a close 2nd. I guess I’ve been lucky because I only experienced a couple minor bugs and two crashes so far, no more than Fallout 3 actually.
My biggest problem with Fallout 3 was the poorly done and moronic main story/quest line along with the inconsistent and random feel of the game world as a whole. As If they built this great world and filled it with “cool shit” and randomness without any thought or plan. This is where New Vegas shines, you can really tell there was a consistent vision and a lot of thought went into the story. For example the first time I went up the Caesar and talked to him hearing his backstory I thought, wow this is really interesting. Also combat has been much improved, shooting someone outside of v.a.t.s. is actually possible now.

Im about 40 hours in and loving it. This def feels like Fallout 3 but for some reason I don’t see myself playing through it multiple times like FO3. All in all, a fun time though!

  10. Kiala Kazebee says:

Also I meant Snuffles the Mole Rat. Not Snuffy. That’s a whole different animal.

No more blogging after wine time, Kiala.

    @veronica

I hate Freeside. I stole one of those Kings outfits, killed a kid and left.

  12. ganatronic says:

I’m surprised that people are able to make it through the game so quickly! I’ve had it since Saturday, and play a few hours each evening, and I JUST made it to Nipton.

I’m digging it! So far I’ve been supporting NCR with my actions… but they are so bureaucratic and boring! Those Legion folks have some interesting things to say… about killing lots of innocent people and stuff.

Pre-update (which came down last night): fucking hated. HATED. So mad that Bethesda went cheap with Obsidian.

Post-update: Happy as a clam. Love the game again.

  15. CK says:

Veronica-I TOTALLY agree. I am always getting lost and my hubby spent like an hour trying to find the Robotics plant.

  16. veronica says:

How much do you hate wandering around Freeside? Why are there so many doors? What kind of crazy town IS THAT?!

  17. Kiala says:

Shit you guys. I meant Obsidian not Oblivion. Late night blogging fail. 🙁

  18. CK says:

I LOVED it. I’ve already played through once and I’m halfway through the main quest in my second file. I agree with the difficulty thing. I played on Very Easy and I was still getting my ass handed to me all the time. I made an attempt at getting up Black Mountain and finally said, “Screw it!” and I promptly threw my 360 controller across the room. Thankfully it didn’t break.

Radio wise Black Mt Radio was my favorite station. It kept me laughing the entire time. But I have now abandoned the Mojave Wasteland for the wilds of Albion and Fable 3…however I plan on venturing back to the desert in the near future.
