A Sexy Cosplay Video From DragonCon

The warm, romantic glow of this DragonCon video has completely changed my perception of Cosplay. If you say “Cosplay,” I imagine awkward costumed fans teetering around a large hall under harsh florescent bulbs. But these people? They’re ready for lurv! I could totes hang with this crowd. Where is DragonCon? *type type-ity type type* Atlanta!? But I wanna hang with Mr. Disco Fever Storm Trooper now!

Ten bonus points if you spot Indiana Jones. Choose wisely, Han!

This vid reminds me that a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I worked at the Anime Expo and kept suggesting we host speed dating. Wouldn’t Nerd Speed Dating be fun at a con!? Do they do that yet!?

O.M.G. Thank you so much for posting this! I was so there, and I mean THERE, in the lage atrium where most if that video was shot. I spoke with several of those people and just saw many, many more. Awesome memories!

To whever commented that Dragon*Con was dull as dirt? You must not have been in the same crowd I was. My husband and I didn’t know another soul in the place and weren’t wearing costumes, but we were welcomed by everyone we stood in line with, sat in a panel beside, or crowded into the sales hall with. The cosplayers were fantatstic, the panels were a riot (nearly literally in the case of the SPN panel with the Castiel puppet), and the people were a blast. Except for the exhaustion, we loved every f’ing minute of it.

I haven’t been to SDCC, but the overwhelming feeling I get when I watch the tv coverage is it’s less about fandom and more about *selling something*. Dragon*Con was All About the Fans, 100%. Being married people in our forties, we’re probably not the target demographic for the people running SDCC, but we’re damn fine fans of everything DC is made of. It suited us to a T. Can’t wait to do that again.

  2. Kevin says:

Hey, I’m in this video! I’m the Hawkeye at 2:43, and my fiance is the Mockingbird at 2:44! And yes, there is nerd love at these cons… we met in costume at SDCC ’09.

  3. Viktor Walters says:

Dragon*Con is excellent. The panels are amazing, it covers the whole plethora of nerddom, and if you like to drink then you’ll like it there- if you don’t, you’ll enjoy the mornings free of all those types since they’re all hungover and can’t make the 10 AM panels!

The con as a whole took a slump last year due to SO MANY PEOPLE and bad organization, but this year they rocked it, got it all under control and outdid pretty much everything. I’m biased, of course, living close to Atlanta and all~

  4. Nathaniel H. says:

I’ve been saying for years (I can say that now that the podcast is in its second year) that Chris and co. should come to Dragon*Con! Glad to hear from the Guild podcast (I’m a few weeks behind, hearing that one now) that he agrees! Dragon*Con rules… and the nights are beyond belief! Don’t know if anyone remembers the “Tonight I’m Frakking You” video posted here a few months back, but the parties are basically that, except with MORE women!

  5. Giggleloop says:

This year was the first time I’ve gotten to attend D*C, and it was a super blast. You’d have an awesome time, Sandra, you should totally go next year! Heck, Nerdist Industries could record a bunch of live podcasts there *HINTHINT* 🙂

  6. Tim says:

I liked the Rincewind hi five at 8:42!

  7. Ben Z says:

Hardwick hit it on the head when he said DragonCon was like the nerd version of FUBU.

  8. Vincent S says:

    XD rofl!

Nerdist Industry presents, Tea Nerd Sandra!

  9. Baldr says:

I’ve heard from a handful of people that the heart that SDCC lost when Hollywood moved in was relocated to DragonCon.

By the way, whoever that silver haired girl that kissed Old!Snake was, my heart effin’ fluttered when she smiled. Marry me, plox.

  10. Logan says:

I am pretty sure I saw Buddy Christ in a wheel chair and it was epic. I have to say I am not into Cosplay as I am too darn shy, but there was some really wicked people in that video that I would love to meet just because they seem really loveable. Great work by them all.

  11. Alas, Vincent, I’m a tea drinker. But I will talk dirty about tea any day!

  12. Vincent S says:

Can you replace the dude that makes the coffee podcast to make coffee sexier? : P jk. I thought DragonCon was mostly anime cosplay (knowing very little of it in the first place), glad to know the other nerd offerings get more cosplay action.

  13. Brian H says:

Saw Indy, but I think the most subtle one was Leon (The Professional).

    Neat video.

  14. Joe C says:

There were a number of nerd speed dating sessions at GenCon this year, and I would assume it’s been going on for some time.

  15. Nic says:

Thursday is character day at my school, I now must be something awesome.

  16. Peter says:

That was awesome! I think the flasher C-3PO was my favorite. Why didn’t I think of that! *shakes fist*

  17. Zenjack says:

I am always amazed at the creativity of cosplayers. The time, energy and not to mention money it takes to create some of those costumes has got to be pretty crazy.

  18. Kyle says:

Short of amazing costumes, Dragon*Con is duller than dirt when it comes to actual content. The volunteers that run the show deserve a round of applause regardless, but it doesn’t have a shine on SDCC.

  19. Leah says:

There are quite a few nerdy speed dating sessions scheduled for this weekend’s NYCC.
