A Return to Rapture (On a Smaller Screen): BIOSHOCK is Headed to iOS

File this under “unexpected ports” for today: 2K Games announced this morning that they will be bringing BioShock to iOS later this summer. The Irrational-developed shooter will be available as a “premium-priced mobile game” for all iOS devices. That means it ain’t gonna be $4.99, methinks.

According to this morning’s press release (accompanied by the screenshots below), the 2007 FPS is getting a second life on mobile with controls optimized for touchscreens as well as “Made for iPhone” game controller support (for peripherals like the MOGA Ace or the iCade controller). That should sidestep any concerns about shooting and blasting your way through Rapture with just the touchscreen.

The first screenshots show a largely-intact BioShock, with some hits to the textures making the port look a little jaggy, but otherwise absolutely perfectly functional. The question is, how will the game animate on both iPads and iPhones? Even on consoles, the original game was stunning, and the herky-jerky, creepy movements of the Splicers essentially made Rapture.

For the one or two of you who haven’t played BioShock, set in the ’50s, the game takes you down into the undersea city of Rapture, a libertarian paradise overrun by genetic horrors that would like very much to cave in your brain. As you make your way through, your nameless character learns about the political schisms and ideological overreach which lead to the would-be utopia’s demise.

The press release is pretty cut-and-dried about BioShock making the move pretty much intact without any subtractions (or additions, for that matter). At this point, we’re simply waiting for a release date and pricing for the port, and we’ll update you when information is available.
