A Replica of RICK AND MORTY’s Portal Gun That Actually Projects Portals

Kansas City’s Hammerspace Workshop doesn’t look like Beth and Jerry’s garage, where Rick and Morty’s adventures usually start, but it might as well be.

In the video above, maker Dave Dalton shows off an impressive replica of Rick’s portal gun — the brilliantly implemented deus ex machina of the show. We’ve seen prop guns before, but none as impressive as this. Dalton’s portal gun actually projects Rick and Morty-style portals (which he describes in an impressive Rick accent and costume).

The unit works by using an audio amplifier and a small projector unit, which run off a lithium ion battery, to shoot and animate the green gateways on surfaces. The projector doesn’t just do portals either — you can watch Rick and Morty on it too.

Rick’s portal gun is arguably the most important piece of sci-fi on the show. Not only does it give the character immense power, it allows for the series’ most powerful emotional moments by accessing parallel timelines and separate universes. There’s nothing quite like having to bury your own body in the backyard, after all.

And that’s the waaaaaaaaaaaay the news goes.
