A Message From MESSENGER

MESSENGER sent us the first ever set pictures taken by a spacecraft orbiting Mercury. This is the first, shared yesterday morning:

Let's not make jokes about how it looks like some dripped some semen onto the surface. We wouldn't want to be vulgar.

Someone call the Doctor. There appears to be a giant bird flying about the universe, pooping on planets. More pictures will be released today, coinciding with a media teleconference at 2 p.m. EDT.

  1. Josh says:

There are 2 cameras on board — the NAC (Narrow angle camera) is monochrome only, and the WAC (Wide Angle Camera) has the ability to use 1 of 11 filters when taking pictures (the different filters help determine the chemical makeup of the surface). The filters can be combined to make a “false color” image — an image released today (http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/image.php?gallery_id=2&image_id=441) is an example of that. The image above was taken with one of the filters only, so there is “color” per se — it’s just seen in one wavelength.

  2. Mike says:

So um….why can’t Nasa afford a color camera with their grossly inflated budget?

  3. Jason says:

Can’t fault dropping a little semen on Mercury. It’s eccentric and hot.

    (booooooooooooooooo!!!)

  4. Jeremy baker says:

Mercury? Looks like Uranus. No but it kinds looks like an anus.
