Can you believe it’s been 50 years since The Beatles played that historic set on The Ed Sullivan Show upon their first trip to the United States? Fifty. Five-Oh. For half a century, the impact of the Fab Four has been felt in popular music the world over and their discography continues to be some of the most beloved songs of all time. Very strange to think they were completely done as a band in less than a decade. The exact moment of them at simultaneously their most innocent and the beginning of their insane popularity is captured for all to see in the delightful feature film, A Hard Day’s Night, which would also produce one of the band’s best albums. Now, 50 years after the release of that movie, it returns to cinemas across the country in a brand new 4K restoration.

John, Paul, George, and Ringo capitalized on their success with a raucous and hilarious day-in-the-life (fitting) movie all surrounding their heading to a televised gig. Directed by The Goon Show director Richard Lester, the film was frantic and frenetic and gave birth in many ways to the modern music video and certainly many other such rock & roll movies. (We have this movie to blame for Spice World, for example.) Featuring seven brand new songs, plus a few of their earlier hits including a show-stopping rendition of “She Loves You,” A Hard Day’s Night is pretty much wall-to-wall music with surprisingly funny comedy bits in it as well. Wilfred Bramble plays Paul’s wily grandpa who makes everything worse, but in a funny way.

I got the opportunity to see the remastered film on the big screen last week, and it looks and sounds amazing. If you’re a fan of the Beatles, I highly recommend checking it out. It’s quite the thing to behold. Seeing the famous “Can’t Buy Me Love” sequence is one of the best theater experiences you could possibly hope for. But you don’t have to take my word for it; Well, you do, but watch the trailer to help make you more excited.
