New York Magazine’s Claude Brodesser-Akner is reporting on the magazine’s Vulture blog that Warner Bros. is in talks with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to reboot Gremlins. This is VERY preliminary — there’s a lot of negotiating to do, and Brodesser-Akner (who had the Zack Snyder Star Wars story the other day — it’s a big week for Claude) says that there have been previous negotiations that came to naught — but there is a possibility that Gizmo may rise again.
Well, then, as we always ask when news of a reboot comes up, is this something you welcome? Is the prospect of better CGI and an updated script, maybe 3D and IMAX, appealing to you? Is it a given that they HAVE to find some way to get Phoebe Cates and Zach Galligan in there? And the legendary Dick Miller, 84 years young, Murray Futterman himself? Don’t mess with Murray Futterman. (I’ll leave Corey Feldman to your scrutiny, and, sadly, Hoyt Axton, Keye Luke, and The Real Don Steele — Rockin’ Ricky! — are no longer with us) Should they reboot the Mogwai? Comment below….
It can be done. It can also be done very poorly (Curse you, Smurfs and Transformers!) I am hesitantly supportive of updates. A sequel with Billy and Kate married with kids, or grandkids might have potential. If they need to put in a DJ doing battle with the Grems, it has to be Howard Stern.
Put Phoebe Cates in it or suffer my wrath. I don’t even care if there are gremlins, just give me Phoebe Cates sharing more depressing childhood memories of Christmas.
I say reboot everything as long as its true to the spirit of what came before. Gremlins had a certain melancholy in tone to go along with the humor which I appreciate sometimes in a film based around xmas time. A failed inventor, a wicked witch of a women, a father dying at xmas, a pet that must be returned, and a kind of lesson about being ready for responsibility. There was much more going on in that movie than many might remember. Theres much to be thought about in that little gem. Just dont fail to keep those complex themes in place.
I am a huge Gremlins fan and would actually like them to just leave the movies alone. I am so happy every time I watch Gremlins 1 and 2 and have never said to myself “wouldn’t it be great to have more of this?”
I would also hate full CGI Gremlins since the puppets in the movies really impressed me since I was a kid.
Lastly I worry about what they would do to the tone with a reboot, call me corny but Gremlins made darker to keep up with horror movies like Saw or Hostile or even just serious enough movies to be in line with Batman Begins displeases me.

you can finish GREMLINS off with the last film in the trilogy starring all the remaining actors still around …. & that would be fine with me (& use practical special effects vs cgi) …. no reboots !

Seriously, it is difficult for me to swallow certain movies that are remakes from the 80s and 90s. There have only been a couple that have made me want to re-watch the film–the Batman reboots.
I like great storylines and somewhat logical endings that mean something. I don’t want to discredit your talents as screen writers, but I don’t want it to be like a Total Recall remake.
I’m going to keep my tabs on you and will be interested to see what you’re going to come up with.

The main problem is a remake has to be different than the original and that’s what we plan to deliver with our remake of the popular Gremlins movie. Check out just what we’ve done!!!
Noooooo! This can’t happen. What about something original. Hollywood is giving me more reasons to not go out and pay money to see movies these days. I’d rather rent the original Gremlins from iTunes first…
Not sure I’d want a reboot, but there’s definitely room for a new sequel, separate to the previous movies but maintaining the established canon, such as it is.
I think the Mogwais ought to remain animatronic, but the Gremlins suit CG.
