Warning: Spoilers ahead for Pacific Rim Uprising.
Pacific Rim Uprising topped the box office on its premiere weekend. Audiences were drift compatible with this sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, and a few familiar faces joined the next generation of Jaeger pilots. While there were plenty of callbacks to the original film, Pacific Rim Uprising had other references for eagle-eyed fans to catch. Today’s Nerdist News picks out nine Easter Eggs in Pacific Rim Uprising.
Join guest host and kaiju/Jaeger hybrid Hector Navarro as he walks us through some of the highlights. Mobile Suit Gundam fans may have noticed the Anaheim Electronics Building in the background of the film’s climactic battle. Anaheim Electronics is the company that makes the giant robots in Gundam. And in an even more overt reference, a giant statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam is in the film.
One of our favorite characters turned heel late in the film when he unleashed the breach. The command he used was Lima Victor-426, a reference to the Xenomorph-infested moon in Aliens, LV-426. Additionally, the “calming voice” of the Jaeger sounds a lot like GLaDOS from the Portal games, and Gipsy Avenger’s Gravity Sling seems like a pretty clear shout out to Gordon Freeman’s Gravity Gun Half-Life 2.
Some of the callbacks to the original Pacific Rim were subtle, like the return of the kaiju-worshiping cults and the simulator that used Onibaba, one of the first film’s monsters, as one of its training exercises. The visit to the Hall of Heroes also had a few cameos by characters who perished in Pacific Rim while canceling the apocalypse.
