80s Villains Meets 80s Pop Music In This Totally Awesome Mash-Up Art

Artist Rocky Davies has captured the glorious neon tackiness of the 1980s with this series of pieces depicting villains from different parts of popular culture–movies, comics and toys–as if they’d all decided to moonlight as musicians and start releasing albums on the side. You know, kind of like Eddie Murphy and Bruce Willis did back in the day (and yes, they really, really did.)

This series features some of the most iconic baddies of the “me decade” paired with fitting lyrics from pop hits from the same era; Freddy Krueger is righteously paired with the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters has the equally appropriate pairing with Modern English’s one (and only) hit “I Melt With You” and Masters of the Universe’s Skeletor gets Haddaway’s “What Is Love” (although that song is the epitome of a ’90s song, but it’s still an awesome image, so I’ll give it a pass.)

The art style on these also looks like the kind you’d find on the posters or t-shirts they’d sell at Sam Goody Records or Spencer’s Gifts at your local mall, circa 1988, next to the rotating fiber optic light, the edible underwear and the Spuds MacKenzie greeting cards (Google is your friend, Millennials.) In the meantime, check out the entire line-up of villain album artwork in our gallery below.

Hopefully Davies continues this series, because I think Darth Vader, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers deserve albums too, don’t you?

Whoa Nerdist!  Thanks for the post!  I did cheat a bit with the Skeletor “What is Love.”  Its because of all those Skeletor is Love internet meme pictures and whatnot, haha.

You did an absolutely fabulous job with the art style, colors, and font choices, every one of these is pure mid-80s perfection. I’m not sure all the songs are the best choices though to fit the characters –though some of them are indeed perfect. Joker’s lyric might have worked even better for Freddy, though the one he is rocking is a great choice as well.

For DOOM, I’d go with another Tears for Fears classic, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, and for the Shredder what could work better than the Vapors hit  “I Think I’m Turning Japanese”? Joker would work perfectly with Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy”,

Also, how could you have Freddy and leave out poor Jason?

      All told, absolutely AMAZING work.

“What is Love” is also the title of a 1984 hit by Howard Jones.
