When I was growing up, you were either a Super Nintendo kid or a Sega Genesis one, so which side did I align with during the great console war of the early ’90s? Well let’s just say the street I lived on was full of rage, which is why I am more than ready to do battle once again with the all new Sega Genesis Classics collection, which will bring 50 games from the beloved system to both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this spring.
Sega Europe announced 50 Mega Drive retro games, including multiple Sonic and Golden Axe installments to ToeJam& Earl, will be included in a collection of Sega classic that will cover “arcade action, shooters, beat’m ups, puzzlers, old favorites, and hidden gems.” But even though the games are old, they will come with a bevy of modern perks, including “online multiplayer, achievements, mirror modes, rewind, and save states.”
The physical copy of the game will come with a double-sided Golden Axe and Streets of Rage poster, like the one in the ’90s-inspired bedroom seen in the game’s promotional video. But don’t get steamed if you’re not a fan of buying hard copies, because the game is getting a digital release too, and Steam users will “also be treated to The Treasures of King Nole in the form of a huge free update to the feature set.”
Both the digitally and physically versions of the game will be available on May 29, 2018, and you can see the entire 50 game lineup below. For more information you can also visit the game’s website.
In the meantime, I’m going try to get over how happy I am about this announcement. Not because I’m not thrilled, but because you can’t survive the streets of Sega if you aren’t full of rage. The ’90s console wars were intense.
