When it comes to a great optical illusion we always take the bait, because we can’t help but be lured in by a talented artist with a cool hook. That’s why we like to cast a wide net over the Internet: to see if we can catch another great image that guts our sense of perception, like this two-dimensional drawing that absolutely looks like a floating fish.
We came across this very cool image at Reddit, and it comes from kaptnkrunch2001 on Imgur. Despite what you see, and no matter how long you look at it, you will have to remind your brain this is not an actual 3D-rendering, this is a drawing on a piece of paper. In fact, don’t stare at it too long because it might make you seasick.
Seriously, we promise that’s not an a 3D-image. So how is it done? This video of another floating fish drawing shows you the way artists play with perspective to create the illusion, which involves cutting out parts of the paper to create a “new” sheet that contributes to the effect.
That’s very helpful, but it still doesn’t answer one question about the purple fish drawing: are those cans in the background also part of the image? How can a flat piece of paper be covering them up? Is this drawing much bigger than we think? Are the cans a separate drawing?
We’re not sure, which only makes it better. That’s why this is yet another optical illusion that got us hook, line, and sinker.
