Thanks to the trailer for Civilization: Beyond Earth, it’s pretty clear the team at Firaxis thinks we’re doomed. But there’s hope, thanks to the next installment in the long-running strategy series: we can fling ourselves at the stars and manage our resources on hex grids there.
This morning, publisher 2K Games sent around a press release announcing that Beyond Earth was in development for the PC, Mac, and Linux for a fall 2014 release. In it, players will leave Earth and attempt to colonize an alien planet in the hopes of building a new civilization.
My only hope is that there’s a dark XCOM crossover somewhere in there.
You can check out the trailer, screens, and box art below.
Not going to lie, it pulling in and becoming a tactical game like x-com for combat would be pretty sick.

Seriously though, this has some amazing potential. I’ll bite.
I kinda wish they set this in space rather than on a planet, but I’m still glad Firaxis is revisiting Alpha Centauri-like concepts again.
Not sure how (or if) they’ll solve the hex grid system in a 3-dimensional space, but aside from that, I’m pretty damn psyched for this.
