24 Drones Dance with Japanese Multimedia Company Elevenplay During AMERICA’S GOT TALENT

Remember how Oscar Isaac’s character in Ex-Machina busted out some awesome dance moves alongside his robot companion? Well if you liked that, you’ll love this! During the second audition episode for America’s Got Talent, Elevenplay, a multimedia dance company from Japan, brought a floating fleet of 24 drones on stage with 5 live dancers. The result was 2 minutes of pure talent, ingenuity, and beauty. Check out the full video above and this hypnotizing GIF below.

Technology has been used in dance since the dawn of the stage lighting, so it’s no wonder that drones and contemporary dance perfectly pair together. With the combined use of tracking software and control systems on these pre-programmed hovering drones, the Elevenplay dancers below could extend their use of space beyond the typical ground-level choreography. Five rotating company members of Elevenplay wore simple white gowns and nurse hats while the drones were affixed with a single glowing light, creating the illusion of 24 dancing lanterns in the sky.

Main choreographer and artistic director of Elevenplay, Mikiko, teamed up with Daito Manabe of Rhizomatiks Research, a collaborative design company based in Tokyo. Of note, Manabe has deep tech aspirations in the art world–he went inside of Bjork’s mouth for her “Mouth Mantra” music video in 2015. Elevenplay has shown their tech-fusion work in several international festivals and have danced alongside virtual pop-star Hatsune Miku, while choreo-director Mikiko has worked with various Japanese musicians such as Babymetal. What was shown during this episode has a predecessor called “24 Drones,” which was originally filmed with only 3 dancers and a simple blueish-white backdrop. Aside from extra stage lighting, a cheering audience, and finicky judges, the two pieces are the same.

Are drones the way of the future in art now? Let us know your thoughts below! And tune into America’s Got Talent to see how far Elevenplay gets in the competition!
