It may be hard to believe, but 2018 will mark the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick‘s masterpiece: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ever since its release in 1968, this adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s story has been widely called one of the greatest films of all time. Now, a new generation of cinema lovers will get the chance to experience 2001 in a very retro way.
Via The Wrap, Warner Bros. will be celebrating the anniversary of 2001 by releasing a 70mm version of the film into select theaters on May 18. According to the studio, this is the “unrestored” version of the movie which was taken from the original camera negative. It’s meant to be as close to the original release of 2001 as possible, so it has “no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits.â
That’s certainly an intriguing element to offer cinephiles. It’s rare to get an opportunity to see 2001 on the big screen, much less a version intended to be as close to Kubrick’s vision as possible. It’s even drawn the attention of the Cannes Film Festival, which will hold a special screening of 2001 at this year’s event with director Christopher Nolan slated to introduce the movie.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the “unrestored” version of 2001 will be released on DVD or Blu-ray. That said, Warner Bros. is planning to release a 50th anniversary edition of 2001 on home video later this year, which will be fully restored.
