12 MONKEYS Recap: “Cassandra Complex”

This week we got a new episode of the SyFy hit 12 Monkeys and found out that Cole pulled some major murder shenanigans that I can only imagine will come back to bite him in the ass later. Well get to that… But first!

“Cassandra Complex” opens with Cole teaching Cassie to shoot… As of now, Jennifer Goines is still missing at the hands of Tom Noonan’s Pallid Man. In the last episode it was revealed that in the massacre of the team of doctors in The Night Room that Jennifer was held responsible for, one got away. Cassie realizes who the missing doctor is –Dr. Henri Toussaint, a man with whom she served in Haiti.

The problem is that Henri is dead. Cassie finds out that he was shot on the way home from recovering medical supplies in Haiti. Cole tells Cassie that he has to travel back to find him in order to find out the location of The Night Room. Cassie agrees under the condition that Cole not speak to her or find her in the past when they are both in Haiti. Cole splinters back to 2043 and tells them what he needs to do. While the team is unsure and worried that he might interfere with the timeline, they reluctantly agree.

Back in 2014, Cassie’s boyfriend Aaron begs her not to go to Haiti. Apparently since her kidnapping at the hands of Cole, Cassie has been chasing pandemics, convinced that they are the start of the end of humanity. Cassie doesn’t give into her boyfriend and heads to Haiti where the CDC has been called in and medical professionals fear the worst. They are still unsure what the virus is. After hours, Cassie and Henri talk in their rooms on the hotel grounds and end up totally doing it just as Cole splinters in. He doesn’t see them in action and Cassie never reveals this secret.

Meanwhile, back in 2043, Cole’s buddy Ramse and Whitley, a tough military guy from the compound, are walking the grounds. Whitley makes it very clear that he does not like Cole or Ramse. That he thinks they’re both scavengers and don’t deserve to be inside the compound but Ramse makes the point that Doctor Jones got her Traveler and they got to live inside the compound so it seems like a fair deal. Ramese threatens Whitley but the soldier makes the very good point that if Ramse goes missing no one will blink; if he goes missing, there will be a problem. Ramse lets up only for a lady to jump onto Whitley from out of nowhere. Ramse knocks Whitley out because he recognizes the woman. Her name is Max. She confronts Ramse about life on the outside. She begs him to let her inside the compond just for a few days. She’s starving and dirty but Ramse refuses and sends her on her way.

Back in 2014, Cassie is starting to panic. She is pushing for a full blown quarantine of the camp. Jules, her supervisor who brought her on the trip, is skeptical but she talks him into it. Henri leaves the camp in search of additional supplies while Cole follows. He’s skeptical of Cole but Cole assures him he is a friend of Jennifer Goines and not part of The Army of the 12 Monkeys; in fact, he’s trying to beat them to the punch and find The Night Room first. Henri promises to tell Cole where The Night Room is only if he lets him get his supplies for the camp. Cole agrees.

Once Henri and Cole begin retrieving their medical supplies, the Pallid Man and his bad guys appear and during a confrontation over Henri, Cole scratches the Pallid Man’s face (the scar!). After the bad guys flee, Henri tells Cole that he actually doesn’t know where The Night Room is; that it moves locations and the doctors were led to it blindfolded. He does tell Cole about “The Big Burn,” UV light strong enough to torch a lab incase anything ever got out of hand. Henri tells Cole that if he can find the specialized equipment, he can find The Night Room. The doctor turns to leave but Cole is convinced that he will continue to be hunted by The Army of The 12 Monkeys and will never be safe as long as he lives. As he walks away, Cole murders him. Back at the camp in Haiti, Jules tells Cassie that the test results for the virus have come back and it’s River Fever. A rare strain, but River Fever nonetheless, and she has made a serious mistake by over dramatizing the situation. Jules tells her to go home and that she needs a break. Cole splinters to 2043 and tells them that he knows how to find The Night Room.

Now, in 2015, Cole and Cassie are continuing shooting practice, this time with live rounds. She asks him to tell her about Haiti and he says that he saw her but that he had to follow Henri alone. Cassie tells Cole she’s going to take a job at the CDC so that she can keep an eye on things. She also opens up about her guilt, that she feels like it’s her fault that Henri died and asks Cole if she saw what happened to Henri that ended up costing him his life. Cole lies and tells her that he splintered before his death and didn’t see who killed him. Uh oh… This is not going to end well, folks!

Finally, back in 2043, Cole confronts Ramse about Whitley being attacked by a scav. The two step away and Ramse tells cole about Max and how she told him she’d left the group that Cole and Ramse had also broken away from. Ramse warns Cole that he doesn’t buy it and that he thinks the group of scavs is close. We close with Max telling the leader, clearly feared by Cole and Ramse, that Cole is alive and inside the compound. He smiles. This guy is trouble.

While so much happens in each hour long episode of this show, I am still really enjoying it. The pace is quick and the characters are smart and feel authentic. I’m looking forward to seeing more from the past and future and watching both timelines unfold. How about you? After what started off fairly solid, are you all still watching 12 Monkeys? Do you find it hard to keep up? Where do you think all of this is headed? Tell us your predictions — NO SPLINTERING ALLOWED!! — in the comments below.

12 Monkeys, starring Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, Emily Hampshire and Tom Noonan, airs Friday nights at 9PM on SyFy.

What I don’t get is why the Army of the 12 Monkeys needs Jennifer or Henri at all. Couldn’t they have just asked/tortured/whatever Leland Goines (obviously before he was killed by Cole) about the location of his Night Room?
